Arthritis

Symptoms

Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease which is most common in those 65 years and older although it can affect people of all ages. The most common form of arthritis is Osteoarthritis which leads to degradation of the normally smooth cartilage which lines the bones. The loss of healthy cartilage results in bone on bone grinding. Inflammation in the joints results in pain and immobility, ranging from mild to severe. The degree of severity is important as it will ultimately determine the type of treatment most appropriate for the stage of the disease that the individual is at and also treatment expectations. For severe end stage arthritis, orthopaedic referral may be warranted.

Treatment

Physiotherapy plays an important role in the management of arthritis. Ultimately the goal of physiotherapy is to help reduce inflammation and pain and to improve joint mobility and strength. In order to achieve these goals our Chartered Physiotherapists use a combination of joint mobilisation, massage, stretching, tailored strengthening exercises and postural training.
