Perthes Disease
Hip pain in children can be caused by a condition known as Perthes Disease which is an osteochonrosis (disruption in blood supply of the bone, typically the epiphysis or rounded ends of the bones) resulting in localised necrosis of the bone. The causes of perthes disease is largely unknown although there is some evidence to suggest it is hereditary. The onset of hip pain is usually insidious and presents as a limp on the affected side, often there will be a limitation in range of movement of the affected hip into internal rotation and abduction.
Physiotherapy Treatment for Perthes Disease
Management of Perthes Disease consists of rest from aggravating activities, your physiotherapist will provide range of motion exercises / stretches in direction that movement is limited. Management is often tailored by the severity of the condition and the child’s age. In severe cases bracing or surgery is sometimes warranted, however in the majority of cases the condition usually resolves and a full return to normal activities and sport is allowed once pain free and x-ray imaging is clear.
